Mindoro Island Health Clinics

Hello all! It's been quite a while since my last post. A lot has happened since we left the Balut Base in Manila. After leaving Manila we headed to Calapan city on Mindoro Island to meet up with the rest of our team for the clinics we'd be helping in. From Calapan we traveled to a small town called Bulalacao where we stayed in a church building for the first week to run the first clinic. We then traveled about an hour away from Bulalacao to a place called Mansalay where we stayed for the next week in an even smaller church to run the next weeks clinics. Here is an little bit about how our clinics ran each day...

On the way to Bulalacao, our first location, we had tire trouble. Actually “tire trouble” is a bit of an understatement, we were stranded for about 4 hours. Good thing there was a family that had a little snack stand on the side of the road where we were, we probably bought everything they were selling that day.

This is our team for the clinics, with the mayor of the town (center in white). He donated a whole pig for our lunch the first day and he asked the army to come and protect us while we worked the clinics.

Every morning before clinics someone from our group would share a short gospel message to the people waiting to be seen by either a doctor or dentist. Often many would ask for prayer after. We had 215 documented first time commitments! That’s not including those who prayed in groups and were not documented.

Linda from our Kona Med DTS is working with a translator to pray for people and share the gospel with them. Almost everyone who visited the clinics would be prayed for at least once, often times they would be prayed for several times before even seeing the doctor.

Before patients would be sent to registration they would be triaged by our wonderful nurses. Sandra here is triaging some children and helping them with wound care.

I worked doing patient intake and regristration. I really enjoyed it but at times it was very crazy and busy with so many people waiting to be seen.

After registration the people would sit in a waiting area and they would get prayed for again based on what they we seeing the doctor for. Barbara Thompson, prayed for most of the patients waiting.

Cute little girls waiting for the doctor and reading tracts.

Doctor Gary saw all the children that came to our clinic, about 380. The first week we had two Philipino doctors working with our team and an amazing team of Philipino nurses to help us with translation and seeing patients. Over all including adults and children, we saw over 700 people. Most suffering from respiratory conditions and worms/parasites.

There was always a huge lines of people waiting to be seen by a dentist. So many people needed extractions and or fillings. The dental team handed out a bunch of tooth brushes and gave many dental hygiene teachings.

Anyone 45 and older was eligible to see if they needed free reading glasses and or sunglasses and there was many teachings given on how to protect their eyes from the sun. The women in the places we were in loved getting the reading glasses. There was so many cute colors and styles and so many times the women would be laughing and pushing each other out of the way to try and be first in line.

Although it was really very hot all the time, I’d say we really enjoyed the towns we stayed in. The people were so friendly and the town was just gorgeous. (A picture of the rice fields at sunset)

Two of our cute friends from Bulalacao came to visit us in our second location. We all enjoyed the last two days visiting with our friends and finishing up the clinics. The girls liked to sit on my air mattress; they thought it was a water bed (behind w/green pillow)

Thank you all so much for your prayers! Please continue to pray for our team:

  • Please pray that Barbara (our DTS school leader) has a save trip home as she is traveling back to New Zealand this weekend and that she would have a joyous reunion with her husband Bruce
  • Thank the Lord that He has protected us while we were traveling over the last few weeks, during car troubles and road conditions
  • Increased discernment for the needs here in Subic and how we can practically use our giftings to serve the people here
  • Please always be praying for the health, safety, and unity of our team and that we would adjust to the heat here (It's sooo very hot!)
  • PRAISE God for the success of the clinics and for working through our teams to care for the peoples health physically and spiritually and praise God for all the people who accepted Him over the last few weeks!
